Thunderbird 2 flies again

Thunderbird 2 flies again: The astonishing airship set to revolutionise haulage, tourism... and warfare

  • The Aeroscraft can carry three times more than the biggest military cargo planes over thousands of miles
  • Heavily backed by the U.S. military, it is now at the prototype stage and is set for its first test flight
  • It is capable of vertical take off and landing and doesn't even need a landing strip

A radical new kind of airship funded by the US military is about to make its first test flight - and it looks uncannily like the Thunderbird 2 craft from the classic TV show.
The Aeroscraft airship will carry three times as much as the biggest military cargo planes over thousands of miles, use a third of the fuel, and it doesn't even need a landing strip.
It could also have major implications for cargo haulage, and almost everything now laboriously transported across the planet's surface by boat, train and lorry could within years be carried through the skies, its makers claim.

California-based aviation firm Aeros, with heavy backing from the U.S. military, has been developing their revolutionary Aeroscraft for several years, and they say the airship is now in its final stages.
They have built a prototype which they hope will finally prove the concept works in practice and allow them to fine tune their systems.
At 77m (250ft) in length, it is just half the size of the final model, but has been built with the same rigid structure, flight control systems and landing gear.
Now all that needs to be done is for it to demonstrate the vertical take-off and landing that will make possible the point-to-point delivery features that will make it perfect for the commercial market.

The finished version of the Aeroscraft - expected to be ready in three years - will carry a payload of 66 tons at a speed of 120 knots, upto 18,000ft with a range of 3000 nautical miles.
That could revolutionise air transport, opening up remote areas where there is practically no other means of access.
It could carry relief supplies for victims in disaster areas, heavy oil-extraction equipment to northern Canada's tar sands, huge turbines to remote wind farms and, of course, heavy military equipment to battlefields worldwide.

The key breakthrough has been the development of an internal system for managing ballast.
Previous airships have been held back by the need to weigh them down or tie them up while cargo is unloaded, lest they are suddenly carried away on the breeze.
But the Aeroscraft's internal ballast management system gives its operators the ability to control the aircraft's buoyancy by compressing the helium inside its tanks to make it heavier than air and bring down to the ground.
Once cargo has been loaded, the airship can rise by re-releasing the compressed helium into its containment tanks, making it again lighter than air, then using turbo-prop engines to control its diretion.
Because of this revolutionary system, Aeroscraft needs no airfield to operate, only a cleared area large enough for it to vertically take off and land, and enough labour on hand to unload the cargo.
Limited: Conventional airships are held back by the need for infrastructure that can enable ground crews to fill them with ballast as they are unloaded to stop them from floating away on the breeze

Aeros's founder and CEO Igor Pasternak, 48, told Gizmag: 'The advantage is you don’t need ground infrastructure. You can fly anywhere, you can land anywhere, you don’t need any ballast, you don’t need any ground crew.'
The airship has long been known as a 'dream machine' for visionary inventors.

AEROSCRAFT FACTS

  • Top speed: 120 knots
  • Range: 3,000 nautical miles
  • Ceiling: 18,000ft
  • Cargo capacity: 66 tons
Count Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin built the first airship in 1900 as a weapon for Germany. The 'Graf Zeppelin' was developed by Dr Hugo Eckener, who flew it around the world in 21 days in 1929.
This powerful symbol of German might was adopted by the Nazis, who funded the creation of the largest airship yet, the Hindenburg.
However, on May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg burst into flames on a trip to the US, having been filled with patriotic German hydrogen instead of American helium.
But Ukrainian-born Mr Pasternak says that his design for a rigid airship is miles apart from the disastrous versions of the early 20th Century.
He told Gizmag: 'From the structure stand point, all of us are familiar with the Hindenburg and Zeppelin designs.
'This is different. We built a space frame that sits inside of the vehicle and around the frame we built a rigid cell. The function of the rigid cell is to have it work with the aerodynamic laws. It’s a very simple approach.
'It also allows us to build vehicles very rapidly. When you’re talking about the production of vehicles, you need the ability to build number of them in a short term and with the frames you can do this.'

The U.S. military has been a key player in the development of the Aeroscraft, with the Pentagon and Nasa giving Aeros a total of $36million towards its research.
'Without the initial funding of the Ministry of Defence it would not be possible to bring such a project to roll,' Mr Pasternak told FT Deutschland.
Accordingly, the first operational versions have already been earmarked for 'intra-theatre airlift', Defense Transportation Journal reports, with each carrying the payload of three C-130 transport planes, but with the fuel cost of just one.

Charlie Sheen Finds Love With Porn Star Georgia Jones

We're not saying that Charlie Sheen has a type - but he definitely has a penchant for adult actresses! Charlie was spotted kissing Georgia Jones at a New Year's Eve party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Charlie was holding a cigarette in one hand and a cigar in the other as he kissed Georgia, who was wearing a denim playsuit. Who said men couldn't multitask?

The Mail Online reports that Georgia has appeared in over 100 films. Between January and April 2011, Charlie was living with porn actresses Bree Olsen and Natalie Kenly, so it's unlikely that Georgia's career choice phases him.

According to E! Online, Charlie hosted the Epic Bar launch party during his Mexican trip, which featured a jam session with Slash, who is Charlie's LA neighbour.

Following the festive celebrations, Georgia tweeted to her followers "Well, I didn't wear my dress but I smoked a cigar double my age."
We hope Charlie can afford such expensive smokes after bailing out his pal Lindsay Lohan!

One Direction's Liam Payne Reveals Strange Life Goal: 'I Want To Be A Sloth'

One Direction's Liam Payne Reveals Strange Life Goal: 'I Want To Be A Sloth'The band member 'thinks the world would be a beautiful place upside down' It may be a rather odd statement to make, but One Direction band member Liam Payne has admitted to wanting to be a sloth, saying that he has 'always wanted to see the world upside down'. But, Directioners don't fret! The heart-throb hasn't gone too crazy, he gave the strange answer when asked what kind of animal he'd like to be if given the choice. “I’d be a sloth.” Liami told Top of the Pops magazine. “They’re pretty lazy and don’t have to look that impressed because they just hang around all day. And the world upside down would be a beautiful thing.” And maybe Zayn would also like to transform into a sloth as well, with Liam labelling the Bradford born cutie 'the laziest member of One Direction'. Speaking about Zayn's bedroom antics, Liam told the mag: "It's 100 per cent Zayn. He never gets out of bed." "In fact, he was third into the car today so he did quite well, but he is incredibly lazy." He continued, "He's not lazy in an 'I can't be bothered to get you a drink' way, just in the way he sleeps, cos he's always the last to get up." Wonder what Zayn has to say to that? And Liam didn't stop there, he also labelled curly-haired cutie Harry Styles, 'dirty Harry' when the guys hit Laser Quest for a fun-filled lads day recently. Although the curly-haired heart throb may currently be all loved up with country singer Taylor Swift, it seems like Liam isn't going to let Harry forget his womaniser ways anytime soon, giving him the dirty new nickname. An insider from their recent adventure to Laser Quest told the Daily Star: "Liam joked that they should all start calling him Dirty Harry after Clint Eastwood in the movie." "So that was it - he was Dirty Harry all night." "He didn't seem to mind at all and they were saying it had a double meaning given his exploits with the women," the source added. Do you think Harry's new nickname will catch on?

Gérard Depardieu meets Vladimir Putin and gets his Russian passport

Film star visits Russian president in Black Sea resort after leaving France to avoid François Hollande's millionaires' ta

Gérard Depardieu has met the Russian presidentVladimir Putin, in the Black Sea town of Sochi and obtained his Russian passport, the Kremlin has said, after the French film star left his homeland to avoid a new tax rate for millionaires.
Putin signed a decree on Thursday granting Russian citizenship to Depardieu, who objected to plans by the French president, François Hollande, to impose a 75% tax rate on the super-rich. His decision to quit France had prompted accusations of national betrayal.
The Russian president and Depardieu were shown on state-run TV station Channel One shaking hands and hugging each other early on Sunday during what the Kremlin said was a private visit.
"A brief meeting between the president and Depardieu took place," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. "On the occasion of his visit toRussia, he was handed a Russian passport."
Peskov did not say whether Putin personally gave Depardieu the passport or if he obtained it through standard procedures. He said the actor also told Putin about his career plans.
Depardieu, who starred in Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card, is a popular figure in Russia, where he has appeared in many advertising campaigns, including one for ketchup. He also worked there in 2011 on a film about Grigory Rasputin.
Putin asked Depardieu whether he was pleased with his work in the movie, TV footage of their meeting showed, with the actor saying he had already sent Putin excerpts.
Depardieu bought a house in Belgium last year to avoid the French income tax rise. The French prime minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, called Depardieu's decision to seek Belgian residency "pathetic" and unpatriotic, prompting an angry response from the actor.
Putin said last month Depardieu would be welcome in Russia, which has a flat income tax rate of 13%, compared with the 75% tax on income over €1m Hollande wants to levy in France.
The Russian president offered Depardieu a Russian passport, saying he had a close, special relationship with France and had developed warm ties with the actor, even though they had rarely met.
Putin's critics said the passport move was a stunt and pointed out that the president announced last month a campaign to prevent rich Russians keeping their money offshore.

Aurora Townhouse Shooting: 4 Dead, Including Gunman

Four people were killed, including the gunman, during a hostage standoff this morning at a townhouse in Aurora, Colo., police said.
Police pumped tear gas into the home in an attempt to get the gunman to leave, and then went into the home and shot him, ABC News Denver affiliate KMGH-TV reported.
The three people found dead in the home are believed to be relatives of the shooter, Aurora Police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson told KMGH. A fourth person was found unharmed, she said.
Officers responded to the home after the first reports of gunshots came in around 3 a.m.

The suspected gunman was found dead inside the townhome at 9 a.m., but police were not sure when he had been shot by officers or killed himself, she said.
"We're just getting in there with our crime scene detectives, so obviously we'll have to determine if it was our rounds or his rounds," Carlson said. "This is a big investigation, and a lot is entailed."
Carlson said neighboring residences were evacuated while the SWAT team attempted to resolve the standoff.
"We've evacuated several residences in the neighboring townhomes and in the immediate area where we believed would be the most dangerous," Carlson told KMGH-TV earlier today.
The Colorado town was the site of a movie theater massacre last July. A gunman opened fire during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.

A Facebook Phone? Company Testing Voice Apps Now

Facebook is building a phone right in front of our faces. Maybe not a real phone, but all the apps and features you'd expect one to have.
Facebook has just added a voice message feature to its Messenger app for iOS and Android. Within the app you can now send a recording to your friends. If you've downloaded the new update you can tap the + button next to the box where you input a message, then tap Record, speak your message and then send it off.
But that's only the start of the voice capabilities Facebook is thinking about. In Canada, Facebook is testing live calls using Voice over IP (VoIP) calling similar to Skype. If you have the iPhone app and live in Canada you can tap the "i" button in the corner of the app and tap "Free Call." You can then make a free call to a Facebook friend who is using the same app. You can't call landline or cellphone numbers.
The system can work over 3G and 4G cellular networks, but it's cheaper if you use Wi-Fi. If you are on a cellular network it will eat at your data plan.

Facebook didn't make a big announcement about the services, but it's a very big move for the social networking company. While Facebook declined to comment on whether it would come to the U.S. or if they could charge for the service, it is a step into voice calling for the company. Not only could that be ultimately disruptive for cellular carriers that offer monthly calling packages, it represents an alternative revenue stream for Facebook.
This is just one of many mobile announcements Facebook has made in the past few months. It upgraded both its iPhone and Android apps to make them faster and it released is new Poke app, which destroys messages 10 seconds or less after you look at them.
In addition to its main app and its Poke app, Facebook also has a Facebook Camera app. You'll also recall that Facebook bought Instagram in April 2012.
Rumors of a Facebook branded phone have swirled around for quite a while now. The New York Times and AllThingsD both reported that the company had internal plans to build its own hardware. However, Mark Zuckerberg denied the rumor in July.
"There are a lot of things you can build in other operating systems as well that aren't really taking, that aren't really like building out a whole phone, which wouldn't make much sense for us to do," he said on an earnings call.
That might make sense, but with all of its apps and now voice features, it sure looks like Facebook is transforming our phones into Facebook phones or it's building its own right in front of our faces

Wondering when you’ll be able to see Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs on the big screen? Open Road Films and Five Star Feature Films, which have partnered to release the film, announced that ‘jOBS’ will be released in April. The movie will premiere later this month at the Sundance Film Festival, which runs from Jan. 17-27 in Park City, Utah.
But Kutcher won’t be playing the young and shaggy Jobs the entire time. Produced by Mark Hulme, the movie details nearly 30 years of Jobs’ life – from 1971 to 2000 – and focuses on the major milestones and characters that influenced the Apple founder. Josh Gad plays Steve Wozniak, and Dermot Mulroney and Matthew Modine also star alongside Kutcher.
“jOBS plunges into the depths of his character, creating an intense dialogue-driven story that is as much a sweeping epic as it is an immensely personal portrait of Steve Jobs’ life,” Open Road Films says of the movie.
The filmmakers were also “granted unprecedented access” to the famous garage in Palo Alto, Calif., where Jobs and Wozniak first started making Apple computers.
Another Jobs biopic, written by Aaron Sorkin, is also being planned.
The only question left: What does Apple itself have in store for the March-April time frame?
